We are planning our trip from Adelaide, through Central Australia (Uluru & Alice Springs), on to the Top End (Darwin), back down to Katherine, and then across to the Kimberleys (Kununurra) and then back home.

UPDATE (21 April 2007): We have now had to postpone this trip indefinitely due to a serious illness within our family. We still hope to make this trip some time in the future.

Introduction

Planning for this trip commenced when we bought our Traveller caravan in July 2006. Our plan is to undertake the trip over 6 to 8 weeks. Initial planning suggests a round trip of 12,000 kilometres over 50 or so days.

Itinerary

Our intention is to leave from Adelaide.

Our first overnight stop will be Port Augusta. The following night we intend stopping at Coober Pedy. Then on to Uluru. We will spend three or four days in the region, before going on to Alice Springs.

After a few days in the Alice we’ll go further north to Katherine for a few days before proceeding on to Darwin. We have friends in Darwin and will stay with them for a week or so, before going on to Kakadu.

From Kakadu it will be back down to Katherine for another overnight stay. From Katherine we’ll take a few days to reach Kununurra where we intend to spend a week. This will include a full day scenic flight over the Kimberleys and Lake Argyle.

Having enjoyed our Kimberley experiences, we will then make a bee line back to Adelaide and hope to make the trip home in a week or so.

Accommodation

Wherever possible with overnight stays we will try and free camp.

Where we intend to stay for a few days at a time, Uluru, Katherine, Darwin, Kakadu & Kununurra we will look at staying in a good caravan park.

As we find links for this trip we will include them here for future reference.

Gary, 342kms per day average is a big ask particularly when you are stopping in some locations for a week at a time. This will make some days on the road huge if you are going to stick with the 35 day allowance. Having said that, it is a big and wonderful land out there so enjoy your travels when you do it next year.  Mick & Sally

Mick & Sally, We will take your comments on board. Hopefully I can accrue and take longer leave to extend the 35 days and maybe not stay as long in some places to reduce the average down to 250kms a day. The joys of planning a big trip! Gary
